Butadiene is a large-volume chemical produced globally. It is an important raw material for the production of organic chemicals such as polybutadiene elastomers, styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) (used in the manufacture of tires), acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) resins, styrene-butadiene latexes, and adiponitrile, as well as for a large variety of other industrial products. Butadiene demand for chemical derivatives is heavily dominated by the production of elastomers (such as SBR and polybutadiene rubber), which accounted for 61% of the overall market in 2017, and compete with natural rubber. There is a myriad of other chemical applications for butadiene; adiponitrile is the largest and is used in the manufacture of nylon resins.
