Description
Polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMEG) is generally a waxy white solid that melts into a clear, colorless, viscous liquid at about room temperature. Commercially produced PTMEG has molecular weights ranging from hundreds to thousands and is manufactured as a mixture of different molecular weights. PTMEG with an average molecular weight of 1,000, 1,800, and 2,000 dominates the consumption. The main uses of PTMEG are spandex (polyurethane) fibers, polyurethane elastomers, copolyester-ether elastomers, and other polyurethane products. Global consumption of PTMEG in 2018 was about 902,500 metric tons. Spandex fiber applications accounted for 79% of the total followed by 15% for polyurethane elastomer applications, and 3% for both other polyurethane and copolyester elastomers such as paints and adhesives. Spandex applications are expected to grow at an average rate of 3.8% per year through 2023, and other applications, including polyurethane elastomers, are expected to grow at about 2.8%. China accounts for approximately 64% of global PTMEG consumption in 2018, followed by Asia (excluding Japan and China) at 16%, North America at 7.9%, Europe at 5%, and Japan and South America at 2.5% each. In China, spandex accounted for 89% of the total consumption in 2018, polyurethane elastomer applications were about 7%, and other applications about 4%. China's spandex and polyurethane elastomer applications are expected to grow at an average annual rate of 4.3% and 6.0%, respectively, over the next five years. As a whole, China's PTMEG growth rate is estimated at 4.4% per year over the next five years. In other Asian countries excluding China and Japan, spandex accounted for 87% of the total in 2018, polyurethane elastomer applications about 10%, and other applications about 3%. The average annual growth rate is expected to be 3.1%. In the United States and Western Europe, PTMEG consumption percentage for spandex is relatively low, accounting for only 18% in the United States and 25% in Western Europe in 2018. Instead, polyurethane elastomers are the largest application of PTMEG in these regions, accounting for 59% of total consumption in both the United States and Western Europe. Demand for PTMEG is expected to grow mainly in China and developing countries. In the United States, Western Europe, and Japan, the average annual growth rate of PTMEG consumption is expected to be less than 1% over the forecast period. Overall, global PTMEG consumption is expected to increase at an average annual growth rate of 3.6% over the next five years, reaching 1.075 million metric tons in 2023.
